Drawing with Scissors and Henri Matisse: Video linked to photo

What you will need:

  • Colorful Paper - You decide what kind of paper! Look around the house or create your own! Newspaper, wrapping paper, tissue paper, use crayon or paint to color paper.

  • Scissors

  • Glue - stick or liquid, whatever you have!

  • One piece of plain white paper

Step 1 - Watch the 7 minute video, at the top of the page, on Henri Matisse.

Or read my information below:

Matisse painted pictures when he first started as an artist, but people didn't like them very much. A newspaper critic called him and his artist friends "Le Fauves!". Which means Wild Beasts. It wasn't a compliment! Henri and his friends used Bright Colors in all the wrong places and people were not used to it.

Look at the colors in this lady's face and the colors on the wall. People were upset.

Towards the end of his life, Matisse became sick and spent much of his time in bed. He attached a piece of chalk to the end of a long stick and drew on his walls!

Eventually, he started using scissors to cut out paper he painted. He cut shapes he saw in nature. These are called Organic shapes. Each one is different.

He pasted them to his walls and floors so that he felt like he was outside. He used them to create pieces of artwork too!

Step 2 - Gather your supplies:

Scissors, Glue, Bright Colored Paper.

Paint your own or color some with crayon. Use wrapping paper or newspaper, magazines...whatever you can find.

Step 3 - Start drawing with scissors!  Make up your own shapes and use Matisse's shapes! Arrange then on your paper to create a nice composition, then glue them on!

I can't wait to see them!

Things to think about while you're working:

*Glue large pieces down first

*Overlap shapes

*Save the scrap piece that you cut a shape out of... That's the Negative Shape and you can glue that one down too!
